Located in Los Angeles County, Lakewood had 88,253 residents as of 2005. It was named “Sportstown USA” by Sports Illustrated Magazine in 2005 and is the home of the first Denny's Restaurant. Located centrally between the 405, 605 and 91 freeways Lakewood is an ideal place to call home. Attractions Lakewood, once a rural community, experienced rapid growth shortly after World War II as veterans flocked to the new suburbs. Lakewood has a mild climate as temperatures range from 58-74 degrees Fahrenheit during the year. The city holds concerts in Del Valle Park on summer evenings. In May, residents take part in the Pan American Fiesta, full of cultural arts and entertainment. In the fall, the city holds a craft boutique called Lollipop Lane and a Halloween Festival. The Lakewood Center is a movie theater and mall complex with one of the largest movie screens outside of Hollywood. Lakewood is only 15 miles from the Disneyland Resort and roughly 22 miles from Los Angeles. Long Beach is directly south of Lakewood. Education Lakewood is served by 4 unified school districts: Long Beach, Paramount, Bellflower, and ABC. There are several elementary and middle schools within Lakewood itself as well as 4 high schools. Within Lakewood there are also 4 private schools including St. Joseph High School for girls. Local universities and other higher-education institutions include Long Beach City College and California State University Long Beach. Recreation Lakewood has several parks and public facilities where residents can unwind. Among these are Bolivar Park, Mayfair Park and Rynerson Park. Many of these parks have sports fields and some have pools and community centers. Lakewood's Restaurant Row is home to large chain restaurants like Red Lobster and the Elephant Bar plus more upscale eateries. |
